• Meet Barbara

Aside from spending time with her family and friends, Barbara Drayer’s greatest joy was painting.  Barbara started painting as a young girl and her love of the craft continued throughout her life. She started out painting oil paintings, but soon, painting watercolor - especially the pictures her eyes could capture - was her most pleasurable hobby. She fully immersed herself in her work and took three art classes each week during her retirement.

Barbara loved teaching her granddaughters Brooke, Elle, Brianna and Julia the techniques she learned in her art classes, so they could create similar artwork. Their creations are signed, framed, and proudly displayed in their homes.

Barbara would often be “in a zone” when she painted - it was deeply relaxing for her.  She loved painting her family and scenes around her, including beaches, trees, and city sights.

Barbara was very humble about her creations. One day, her art teacher in Bridgehampton was having a gallery showing of the students’ art work. Barbara was reluctant to attend, but she took her daughter only because it was a 10 minute ride from the house. When Barbara walked inside, her teacher gasped.  “Our star artist is here!” she said. Barbara was embarrassed.  But her children couldn’t get over her work.

"I can’t stop thinking of her and how vibrant and passionate she was about her painting.”

Angela D’Aleo,  art teacher

“Barbara was one of my star students….not only was she extremely skilled and talented but she was also the kindest and the most thoughtful.  We all loved her.”

Wennie Huang, art teacher at 92Y.
